Slowing The Flow of A Seasonal Stream, Ditchling, Sussex.

Designed and shaped by Padstone Homes.

Slowing the flow of a seasonal stream near Ditchling Common. The stream was once shaped and slowed by the previous homeowners and over time a slow leak through layers of clay formed a new path underground. Our task was to rebuild the dam with stone and clay, slowing the flow to form ponds above and below a small waterfall. As well as to block the waters path through the bank to stop further erosion.

We’ve left the banks as open soil to naturalise with the wildflowers already on-site, because that part of the garden is already a wildflower meadow, full of diversity. Plants will spread and reach or new seeds with blow in from the garden or the nature reserve nearby.

We’ve seen it flow during summer downpours and when the water flows again constantly we will go back to finish adjusting the stones.

A small, and fun project to take on. Full of clay and water. We’ve already seen insects and birds interact with the slower water, which will be useful during the drier months of the years.

Note: We are on the lookout for other people to collaborate with on similar projects in the future.
